I have a ppointment to have my car diagnosed at the local german auto shop.

Kinja'd!!!

Im an idiot and Against my better judgement b ought the car with a check engine light illuminated, the dealer assured me that it was a glitch.(and he hooked up a scan took, which showed no codes) The whole time I figured there was more to it, but needed a car and it had passed s mog so there wasn’t any glaring emissions related fault(so I assumed the light wasnt on for anything too bad ).

Kinja'd!!!

Got the code read at a decent shop and it is 2885 Boost Pressure Control Deviation, which throws the motor into a reduced power mode. This explains why t he car felt kinda gutless.

Kinja'd!!!

Briefly fiddled around looking for any boost leaks so the autozone rubber pcv hoses got replaced with some aeroquip pushlock I had laying around.

I’ve contacted the dealer which is 250 miles away and I’m told they will work with me to pay for the fix. I’ve got an appointment to diagnose on the 11th at which point I will know what this is going to cost (hopefully).

Kinja'd!!!

The CEL has turned off a couple times and now I know what I’m missing in regards to power.

Does the intake have an EO number? It’s rather shady if it passed without it. There are some people that actually have emulators where you can pass a car, you just need the VIN.

But if the dealer agrees to fix it then I guess all will be well.

It has a little official looking sticker on the radiator mount

The situation is  slightly more complicated then is worth explaining, but it was either this car or my brother giving me rides to work until I bought a $500 something or other

Ah, see, I think the source of your problem was that you wanted a daily that was fun while you worked on your also fun project car. Fun = breaks all the time.

Every single car on my potential daily list was unreliable, I knew it would be like this. It will look good while I tool around with mmmaybe 120hp

The light has washed it out, but it looks like an EO sticker.

Also, just so you know for future smog checks that catch can is explicitly allowed. But you may encounter an issue with most techs assuming it’s illegal without an EO number.

Good news is it’s from the same company on the intake and sticker, I believe it was all part of the intake package

If you want to spend $30 and have a windows laptop, look into setting up INPA. Quick and easy way to diagnose issues.

My Mini recently threw a P0171. This is from INPA:

Much more detailed that just the OBD stuff.

Looks like I may have dirty map sensors (no vac leaks as per a specialty Mini shop )

Give me sometime, I’ll post some useful stuff. I’m busy with work stuff

For now this is where you can get the software:

https://www.bimmergeeks.net/downloads

download standard tools and follow the instructions

I’m using this cable:

Oh shit NM Engineering is DBA for Neuspeed, and they or may or not.... be quite close to me. They’re super cool there and always give me a discount since I pick up in store. Neuspeed and their other brands are expensive, but they always make CARB legal stuff.

Thats really cool, it seems that owner spared l ittle expense.

I combed through the internet and it looks like this specific car was used to showcase products for a company called Carbonmini which sells c arbon fiber overlays. Their website is garbage but this cars all over their FB page.

Step by step video to help install INPA if you are not computer savvy:

You may need to edit this file for your Mini to showup in  the INPA menu:

C:\EC-APPS\INPA\PRT\ENGLISCH\E3PROTOK.INI

What year is it? If it’s got the N14 engine prepare for never ending issues. If it’s the newer N18 you should have much less hassle.

09 so its n14, running through the service history didn’t exactly inspire confidence, new clutch at 50k, new timing chain and guides at 30k, more timing guides at 85k, waterpump at 50k, at least 5 records showing an oil leak around the valve cover that never got found. Now its 95,000 miles so I imagine I'm in for a new turbo, and another clutch, maybe another waterpump and timing chain

I think I had the guides/chain fixed 3 times on my 07s. For that oil leak, check the turbo feed/return lines. The seals cook pretty easy. I had to replace the hardline back behind the turbo. I f it hasn’t self-immolated by now it may be the same one for you. That one could look like a valve cover, oil tends to get everywhere. It is not a fun time to fix.

Never had water pump issues or the dreaded HP fuel pump. My original clutch was still solid @ 100k, so either someone was tromping on it, or the extra 20 JCW HP was too much? =)

Just make sure to keep a qt of oil in the back. You’ll need to top off every 1K. You can test by making a spirited right turn and seeing if the oil indicator comes on.

If you don’t see it in the service history, save up and get the valves  walnut blasted. @ 95K it’ll make a HUGE difference. The catch cans don’t do much.

You know mini interiors are bad when a bunch of stick on carbon fiber makes it look less tacky
